What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is both the past and future of medicine. It is a distinct healthcare profession with 125 years of history that uses natural therapies including nutrition, hydrotherapy, herbs, and counseling to help patients heal. It combines traditional teachings with modern science and research to evaluate, diagnose, and treat a variety of conditions. Most importantly though, it is an approach to medicine that puts the patient front and center, valuing their individuality and inherent ability to heal.

Naturopathic Doctors (ND’s) are licensed to practice naturopathic medicine. They spend 4+ years in the classrooms and clinics of accredited institutions learning to practice primary care medicine before going on to sit for their respective state licensing boards. Although the scope of practice and application of naturopathic medicine can differ, it is the naturopathic principles that unite us as a profession.

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine:

  1. The Healing Power of Nature

  2. Identify and Treat the Cause

  3. First, Do No Harm

  4. Doctor as Teacher

  5. Treat the Whole Person

  6. Prevention
